Every autumn the same question comes up in different words: is this a good year to go? For 2026-27 the short answer is yes. The sun passed the peak of its 11-year cycle in October 2024, and the years just after a solar maximum still bring strong displays.
Below: what the solar cycle means for this season, the months and hours that work best, how the forecasts work, and the part nobody can forecast weeks ahead, the clouds. For the month-by-month picture in more depth, see our guide to the best time for the northern lights in Norway.
The quick answer
The 2026-27 northern lights season in Northern Norway runs from late August to late March, and the evening cruises from Tromsø sail from about September to March. Solar cycle 25 peaked in October 2024, and Visit Norway calls this one of the most active periods of the sun's cycle. No one can promise a display on a given night: the aurora is never guaranteed, and clouds decide more than the sun does. That makes the cloudy-night offer the real difference between cruises.
Is 2026-27 a good season for the northern lights?
Yes. The sun is in the years just after its October 2024 peak, a stretch that still brings strong displays, and Northern Norway sits under the auroral oval every winter.
Solar cycle 25 reached its maximum in October 2024, with a smoothed sunspot number of about 161, according to the Belgian sunspot centre SILSO. It was a stronger cycle than most scientists first predicted. Visit Norway puts it simply: we are in one of the most active periods of the sun's 11-year cycle, and now is a great time to head north.
A cycle does not switch off after its peak. In November 2025, more than a year after the maximum, a large flare led the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center to issue a rare G4 storm watch. NOAA updates its cycle prediction every month and says the next cycle, number 26, should begin some time between January 2029 and December 2032. The 2026-27 winter sits well inside cycle 25.

When does the 2026-27 northern lights season start and end?
Visit Norway gives late August to late March, and Visit Tromsø says late August to early April. The evening cruises from Tromsø run from about September or October to March.
The aurora is out there all year. You only need a sky dark enough to see it, and in Northern Norway that starts in late August. Statistically, Visit Norway says, September and October, then March and April, have the highest aurora activity. November to February works too, with the longest nights of the year.
Each month has its own character. Autumn nights are milder, typically 0 to plus 12 C according to Visit Norway, and the lights reflect in open fjords. The polar night from late November to mid-January gives you darkness from the afternoon on. Late winter brings snow, cold and longer days. Check each cruise listing for its own season dates.
| Months | What the season is like | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| September and October | High aurora activity, mild nights, no snow yet on low ground | About 0 to plus 12 C (Visit Norway) |
| November | Quiet, darker evenings, the whale season begins | Rain or snow on the coast |
| Late November to mid-January | The polar night: no sunrise in Tromsø | Twilight around midday |
| February | Snow, cold and clear spells, more daylight | Coast typically plus 5 to minus 5 C |
| March | High aurora activity again, long bright days | The last weeks of the cruise season |

Visit Norway says peak time is often between 11 PM and 2 AM, and that the lights are most frequent from 6 PM to 1 AM in the season.
An evening cruise covers the early part of that window. The evening aurora cruise sails from 8 PM to 11:30 PM, with the deck open the whole way. The cruise with a free second chance lasts 2 hours 30 minutes. A display can start, fade and come back three times in an evening, and the guide's job is to call you out when it moves.
For the late hours, the land option goes longer. The minibus chase runs about 6 hours, with a thermal suit, a bonfire and pro photos, and drives wherever the sky is clear. We would pair the two: a cruise on the first evening, a chase on a night with a strong forecast.
| Trip | When it runs | Length | From (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Evening aurora cruise | 8 PM to 11:30 PM | 3 hours 30 minutes | $129 |
| Cruise with a free second chance | Evening | 2 hours 30 minutes | $127 |
| Electric northern lights cruise | Evening | 3 hours | $139 |
| Minibus chase by land | Evening into the night | 6 hours | $139 |
How do you read the aurora forecast for a cruise night?
Look at two things: the aurora forecast for activity, and the cloud forecast on yr.no for the sky. Clouds decide most nights on the coast.
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center publishes a 30-minute aurora forecast built on its OVATION model. It reads the solar wind at a satellite about 1.6 million km from Earth and shows where the aurora should be 30 to 90 minutes ahead. NOAA adds that a bright aurora can be seen from as far as 1,000 km away when conditions are right. Visit Norway runs its own forecast app, NorwayLights, and yr.no has an aurora forecast next to its weather maps.
The aurora happens around 100 km up, above the clouds. A strong forecast under thick cloud still means a grey night. That is why the boats choose their route on the night. The electric cruise heads north towards Kvaløyvågen, south to Ramfjorden or west along Kvaløya, depending on where the clearest weather is predicted.
| Tool | What it tells you | When to check |
|---|---|---|
| NOAA SWPC 30-minute forecast | Where the aurora is and how strong, 30 to 90 minutes ahead | During the evening |
| yr.no | Cloud cover by the hour, plus an aurora forecast | The day before and the afternoon |
| NorwayLights app (Visit Norway) | An aurora forecast for Norway | Before you head out |
| Your guide | The route for the night, picked from the weather | At the quay |

What happens if the sky stays cloudy on your cruise night?
That depends on the cruise you book. One gives a free second cruise, one a discounted second tour, the yacht gives you dinner and the hot tub either way, and most others have no retry offer.
This is the honest part of any aurora trip, and the most useful one when you choose. The cruise with a free second chance puts you on the next available chase at no cost if you see no lights. The evening aurora cruise offers a discounted second tour on days with free places. The yacht cruise has a reindeer stew dinner and private hot tub time for your group, lights or not.
Our tip for the 2026-27 season: book your cruise on your first or second night. A retry only helps if there is a night left to use it.
| Cruise | If you see no lights | From (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Free second chance cruise | A free second cruise on the next available chase | $127 |
| Evening aurora cruise | A discounted second tour, subject to places | $129 |
| Yacht with hot tub and dinner | Dinner and the hot tub either way | $345 |
| Electric cruise | No retry offer; soup and the fjord at night | $139 |

The safest bet for a short trip: a warm lounge, outdoor platforms, a guide on board and a free second cruise if the sky stays closed.

Early, and with the first nights of your trip in mind. Every cruise here cancels free up to 24 hours before, so booking ahead costs you nothing if plans change.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before is on every trip we list, so there is no reason to wait for a forecast. Lock in a seat, then watch the weather. Two details matter in the quieter weeks. The free second chance cruise runs only on Fridays and Sundays in the low season, and the evening aurora cruise needs at least 10 guests, with rebooking offered on bad-weather nights.
Small boats sell out first. The yacht cruise takes 12 guests at most and the new Trondheim fjord cruise only 8. For the cruises compared side by side, read our guide to the best northern lights cruise in Tromsø.

What are the best months for the northern lights in 2026-27?
Visit Norway says September and October, then March and April, have the highest activity. November to February works too, with the longest dark hours.
Can anyone forecast the northern lights weeks ahead?
No. NOAA's aurora forecast looks 30 to 90 minutes ahead, and cloud forecasts a day or two. Book with free cancellation and watch the weather.
Are the northern lights guaranteed on a cruise?
No cruise guarantees them. The free second chance cruise gives you another trip if you see nothing, and the evening cruise a discounted second tour.
