The polar night, mørketid in Norwegian, is the stretch of winter when the sun stays below the horizon. In Tromsø it lasts about seven weeks, and it is one of the best times to be on the water, by day and by night.
Below: the 2026-27 dates, what a polar night day really looks like, which cruises sail, the aurora odds, and a simple plan for a day in the dark season. For the full season picture, read our post on the 2026-27 northern lights season.
The quick answer
Visit Tromsø gives the polar night as roughly 27 November to 15 January. The sun is back above the horizon around mid-January, but the mountains hide it from the town until later in the month, and Tromsø celebrates its return on 21 January. It is not dark all day: you get a few hours of twilight around midday, with pink skies and the blue hour. Daytime fjord and whale cruises use that light, and the aurora cruises sail every evening.
When is the polar night in Tromsø in 2026-27?
From about 27 November 2026 to 15 January 2027, according to Visit Tromsø. Visit Norway gives the same window: the end of November to the middle of January.
The sun clears the horizon again around mid-January. In the town itself, the mountains to the south keep it out of sight for a few more days. Tromsø marks the sun day, Soldagen, on 21 January, and The Arctic University Museum of Norway holds a celebration that day. Across Northern Norway the custom is skoleboller, a sweet bun with a vanilla custard centre, and hot chocolate.
The further north you go, the longer it lasts. Lofoten gets only a few weeks, and Bodø has no true polar night at all. Svalbard is dark from the end of October.
| Place | Polar night (Visit Norway, from Nordnorge.com) |
|---|---|
| Svalbard | End of October to the beginning of February |
| Kirkenes and the North Cape | End of November to the end of January |
| Tromsø and Alta | End of November to the middle of January |
| Lofoten and Vesterålen | Start of December to the start of January |
| Bodø | No true polar night; mountains block the sun in late December |

Is it dark all day in Tromsø during the polar night?
No. Visit Tromsø describes a few hours of twilight each day, and on clear days the sky turns pink, purple and deep blue around midday.
The sun is below the horizon, not far below it. On clear days its light reaches up and paints the south in pinks, oranges and reds, while the north stays a deep midnight blue. Visit Norway calls the afternoon spell Blåtimen, the blue hour, when the light reflects off the sea and the snow and everything turns cobalt.
It feels strange for a day or two. You lose track of time, and lunch looks like dusk. Then it becomes the best light of the year for photos, soft and low with no harsh shadows. Plan outdoor things for the late morning and midday, and keep the afternoon for the blue hour.
| Part of the day | What you see | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Dark, slowly turning blue | Breakfast, travel to the quay |
| Late morning to early afternoon | Twilight; pink and orange skies on clear days | Fjord and whale cruises, walks |
| Afternoon | The blue hour over sea and snow | Photos from the harbour |
| Evening and night | Full dark | Aurora cruises and chases |
Which cruises run in Tromsø during the polar night?
All of them. The daytime fjord, fishing and whale cruises sail in the midday twilight, and the northern lights cruises sail every evening.
The Arctic fjord cruise is the easy daytime pick: 3 hours 30 minutes past the Arctic Cathedral, snowy islands and sea eagles, with free coffee or tea, a warm lounge and outdoor platforms. The fjord cruise with fishing runs 4 to 5 hours, and its all-inclusive option adds fish soup and thermal suits. The whale watching cruise is the big day out, 7 to 9 hours to the herring grounds near Skjervøy.
On the coldest days there can be ice in the fjord. Rødne Fjord Cruise says its captain then picks another route with the same kind of scenery. After dark, every aurora cruise on this site runs through the polar night.
| Cruise | When | Length | From (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arctic fjord cruise | Daytime | 3 hours 30 minutes | $133 |

Explore the Arctic fjord cruise Tour detailsIs the polar night a good time to see the northern lights?
Yes, for the hours of darkness, though not the statistical peak. Visit Norway says September, October, March and April have the most activity, and November to February works too.
In the polar night it is dark from the afternoon until late morning, so every clear hour is a chance. Visit Norway still puts the busiest aurora months either side of winter, and for the deep winter its advice is to cross your fingers for a sun storm. Clouds are the bigger question. Coastal Northern Norway typically sits between plus 5 and minus 5 C in winter, with mixed weather.
That is where a boat helps. It sails away from the town lights to wherever the sky looks clearest, you stay warm inside, and you step out when the guide calls. On a cloudy night, the cruise with a free second chance gives you another go at no cost.

A warm catamaran lounge, a guide who calls you out on deck, and a free second cruise if the polar night stays cloudy.

Cosy and busy. The town lights up for December, the cafés fill up, and winter brings film, music and running events.
Norwegians have a word for it, kos: good food, warm drinks, soft light and time with friends. Visit Norway points to the view from the Fjellheisen cable car, the Christmas streets in December and hot chocolate in the town's cafés. Polaria, the Arctic experience centre with its seals, and the Polar Museum make good indoor stops.
Winter also brings the Tromsø International Film Festival, the Northern Lights Festival and the Polar Night Half Marathon. Locals keep moving too, on lit ski trails and with a sauna and a dip in the icy fjord. Many of them wear spikes on their shoes, but leave those off for the free second chance cruise, which does not allow them on board.
| In town | What it is |
|---|---|
| Fjellheisen cable car | The town lights and the fjord from above |
| Polaria | Arctic experience centre with seals |
| The Polar Museum | Arctic exploration history |
| Winter festivals | Film festival, Northern Lights Festival, Polar Night Half Marathon |

How do you plan a polar night day in Tromsø?
Use the twilight for a daytime cruise, rest in the blue hour, and book an aurora cruise for the evening. Dress for the deck both times.
A good day looks like this. A fjord cruise in the late morning light, lunch in town, the blue hour from the harbour, then the evening aurora cruise from 8 PM. If you have three nights or more, put the aurora cruise early in the trip so a retry fits.
The wind on a boat deck makes it feel much colder than the thermometer says. Wear wool layers, a windproof jacket, a hat and gloves, and bring a spare pair. Our guide to what to wear on a northern lights cruise has the full list.
| Time | Plan | Booking |
|---|---|---|
| Late morning | Fjord cruise in the twilight | Arctic fjord cruise, from $133 |
| Afternoon | Lunch, the blue hour, a rest | Free |
| 8 PM to 11:30 PM | Aurora cruise with the deck open | Evening aurora cruise, from $129 |
| Another night | A chase by land if clouds sit on the coast | Minibus chase, from $139 |
The evening aurora cruise: 3 hours 30 minutes on the Arctic sea, a warm cabin, the deck open the whole trip.
