Hurtigruten northern lights cruise or an evening cruise

A northern lights cruise in Norway can mean a week on a coastal ship or one evening on a fjord. Here is what the coastal voyages are, how the Northern Lights Promise works and when an evening cruise is the better fit.

Search for a northern lights cruise in Norway and two very different trips come up. One is the coastal voyage, on the route Norwegians call the Coastal Express: a working ship that sails from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, calling at dozens of ports. The other is a short evening cruise from Tromsø, out into the fjords for a few hours and back by midnight.

We do not sell the coastal voyages; they are booked directly with the shipping lines. This guide explains them as background, so you can see which trip fits your time and budget. For a short stay in the Arctic, an evening cruise is usually the answer.

The quick answer

A coastal voyage with Hurtigruten or Havila takes 6 to 12 days and is priced in the thousands, with a promise of a free voyage the next season if you see no lights on a long trip. If you have a few days in Tromsø, an evening cruise does the same job in one night: the cruise with a free second chance from $127 gives you a free retry, and the evening aurora cruise from $129 a discounted one.

What is a Hurtigruten northern lights cruise?

A winter voyage on Norway's coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes, on ships that also carry locals and cargo. You watch for the aurora from deck every night of the trip.

The route dates from 1893, when the first ship sailed from Trondheim on 2 July and post could finally reach the north in days instead of weeks. Today eleven ships share it, seven run by Hurtigruten and four by Havila since 2021, so a ship leaves every port each day in both directions. Northbound the voyage calls at 34 ports, southbound at 33.

In winter the ships sail under the auroral oval, and the crew announce the lights when they appear. Visit Norway describes the observation decks as a front-row seat.

How long is a Hurtigruten northern lights voyage?

Seven days northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes, six days southbound, or a 12-day round trip. Some lines and packages offer other routes and shorter sections.

Havila lists 7 days northbound, 6 days southbound and a 12-day full round trip with 34 ports. Hurtigruten sells the same classic route and longer winter itineraries. Visit Norway lists packages that combine a few days in Tromsø with a stretch on a coastal ship, from about four days.

Because the ships carry passengers from port to port, a short leg is possible too. That is a ferry ride with a view, though, not an aurora trip planned around the dark hours.

What is the Hurtigruten Northern Lights Promise?

On voyages of 11 days or more between 20 September and 31 March, if the deck officers record no aurora sighting, Hurtigruten gives you a free 6- or 7-day Classic Voyage the next season.

The terms on Hurtigruten's site count a sighting when it is recorded by the deck officers and announced on board, even if it lasts a few minutes. For sailings from 20 September 2026 to 31 March 2027, the free voyage is a 6-day southbound or 7-day northbound Coastal Express trip between 20 September 2027 and 31 March 2028, in an inside twin cabin with full board. It must be claimed within 28 days of your return, and Hurtigruten can change or withdraw the offer.

Havila Voyages also offers a Northern Lights Promise, a free second chance if you do not see the lights; check its current terms with Havila. On a short trip, the evening cruises in Tromsø have their own version: the second chance cruise sails again free on the next available chase.

Is a Hurtigruten cruise good for seeing the northern lights?

Yes, for a long trip. You spend many nights under the auroral oval and the ship moves along the coast, so you get several chances at a clear sky.

Hurtigruten calls its ships mobile observatories that sail from cloudy areas to clearer ones, and every cabin has a northern lights alert. The more nights you spend at sea, the more chances you have. That is the logic behind the Promise only applying to voyages of 11 days or more.

What a voyage asks for is time: a week or more on board, ports that pass in the middle of the night and a deck shared with the whole ship. An evening cruise is the short version, a small boat that goes where the guide thinks the sky is best tonight.

When is an evening cruise from Tromsø enough?

When you have a few days in the Arctic rather than a week or two. Two or three evenings in Tromsø, with a cruise that offers a retry, give you a fine chance of the lights.

A short stay is how most people see the aurora. Fly into Tromsø, which has direct international flights, book a cruise for your first evening and keep the next night spare. If the first night stays cloudy, the second chance cruise takes you out again free, and the evening cruise offers a discounted second tour.

You also get your days back, for whale watching, dog sledding or the cable car. A coastal voyage is a holiday in itself; an evening cruise is a night inside a bigger trip.

How much does a northern lights cruise in Norway cost?

Evening cruises from Tromsø start at $127, and a yacht night with dinner costs $345 (2026). A coastal voyage is priced in the thousands.

The evening cruises cancel free up to 24 hours before, which makes them easy to fit around a changing forecast.

Can you combine a coastal voyage and an evening cruise?

Yes. The coastal ships call at Tromsø, and a few days in town before or after the ship give you time for an evening cruise and whales.

Every coastal voyage on the classic route calls at Tromsø. Visit Norway lists packages that do exactly this: a stay in Tromsø plus a stretch on a coastal ship. If you have the time, it is a lovely way to see the north, because you get the fjords from a small boat and the coast from a big one.

For the Tromsø nights, the yacht cruise is the most special. It is a 34 m sailing yacht for 12 guests at most, with reindeer stew and a private hot tub slot.
