Rødne Fjord Cruise · Nerstranda quay, Tromsø

An Arctic fjord cruise from Tromsø by day

Rødne Fjord Cruise, which runs the second chance aurora cruise at night, also sails the fjords by day on a warm catamaran, past the Arctic Cathedral, snowy islands and small villages, with a guide pointing out sea eagles and reindeer on the shore. Pick it to see the landscape that the night cruises only show you as dark shapes.

Arctic Fjord Cruise in Polar Landscapes

About this experience

At night the fjords around Tromsø are black shapes under the aurora. This cruise shows them in daylight. Rødne Fjord Cruise sails from the Nerstranda quay in central Tromsø on a sustainable hybrid catamaran with a warm lounge, leather seats and panoramic windows. You pass the city and the Arctic Cathedral, then head out to islands, small villages and snowy mountains. It has 4.7 stars from 1,963 reviews. You can cancel free up to 24 hours before.

The guide talks about the wildlife, the climate and the history of the region, and explains why Tromsø is called the Paris of the North. Keep an eye on the shore for sea eagles, and now and then a reindeer. On the coldest days there can be ice in the fjord, and the captain then takes another route with the same kind of scenery. Guests mention seals, foxes and porpoises too, though wildlife is never promised. The guides also share tips for landscape photos.

Move between the warm lounge and the outdoor platforms as you like. Coffee or tea and Wi-Fi are free, and the kiosk sells locally baked treats. The trip lasts 3 hours 30 minutes and leaves from the same quay as the second chance northern lights cruise, which makes the two an easy day-and-night pair. There is no hotel pickup.

[...] I had an amazing time on the cruise and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The boat was modern and very comfortable, with large windows to fully enjoy the views, plus plenty of space out on deck. We were lucky enough to spot eagles, a few red foxes, and even some seals during the journey! [...]

One word…excellent. If you’re only doing one excursion then do this one. [...] The crew were fabulous, Daniel had just the right level of sarcasm and humour to make the trip a fun experience. The catamaran was spotless and viewing decks were available when you’re ready to brave the cold. Worth every penny!!!

The comfortable and spacious cabin was nice, yet we spent most of the time out on the deck to get the most out of the experience. The views were stunning and we even spotted some wildlife - like the swimming raindeer 😅. Daniel was a great guide with plenty of hilarious comments. We world recommend the tour

An incredible experience, beautiful scenery. It's absolutely worth it. I canceled the bus tour to go by boat, and I don't regret it at all! I highly recommend it.

Tips before you book

  • Pick a departure in the brightest part of the day. In the polar night, from late November to mid-January, the sun does not rise and the light is a soft blue.
  • Bring warm clothes for the platforms. You will want to be outside when the eagles show up.
  • Pair it with the night cruise from the same quay. You see the fjords by day and the aurora by night.
  • Our post on the polar night in Tromsø explains the light in the dark months.
